Bringing Some Files Up-to-date

December 5, 2022
Pen and watercolor sketch from a photo reference of @earthsworld. Handbook journal, about 6 x 8 inches.

I’ve been attempting to reorganize past sketching files and blog post ideas.

Images pop up in the search and I think I might have already posted about them.

Instead I discover that I’ve only posted a cropped portion on Instagram. I haven’t posted the full image or written about it. And it was in my writing file because I wanted to write about it.

In this past year with everything stored and not at hand I’ve even managed to lose two sets of notes for a several series of blog posts.

I sat down to write a series and couldn’t find the notes. I immediately came up with another idea for a series which would use the same images. Then I lost that set of notes.

Don’t get me wrong. None of this is “arduous.” This blog is just what I do for fun: chat about sketching and my journal practice.

But it has made me feel I’m in some sort of “Groundhog Day” scenario.

There is a lesson here I seem destined to relearn multiple times in my life.

We simply need to go on.

If we put in our exercise and we get some sleep then when the time comes to write (or whatever it is you do), we’ll have a lot of things to say. Those first two sets of ideas which have evaporated, or slipped into storage boxes sitting in a warehouse locker might have been great, or fun, or even funny, but there is always more. I don’t believe in scarcity.

In the time you might spend worrying about scarcity you could have 50 more great ideas.

I do believe my life will get back to “normal” and I’ll regain the organization that underpinned my entire life before 2019. That organization provided a comfortable position to create from. But I know it isn’t necessary, and that’s a new fun lesson for the day.

The sooner we can get on with the task we’ve set, without drama, the more creatively productive we can be.
