What I Did in the Pandemic: Sketched MORE Peppers Of Course!

January 12, 2024
The peppers in this post are in a 6 x 8 inch or so Hahnemühle Travel Journal. That journal has drawing paper and I love it for a lot of different pens, and also for watercolor. But most people I know tend to just use the book for notes. Find out what you have a taste for in paper as well as peppers.

Peppers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and I eat quite a lot of them. Here, two years past the sketches in my last post, I’m still sketching peppers. I’ll always sketch them.

That’s because I’m always eating them.

I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t have at least one pepper. Not just bell peppers, but all sorts of hot peppers as well.

The Pandemic was good for getting me to expand my use of peppers in my cooking. I pushed for spicier food, food with deeper flavors, that would be satisfying, because we weren’t going out to eat; weren’t even getting take out.

Before lunch on this day I sketched a triangularly shaped bell pepper.

These are all three views of the same pepper, but the fact is that first sketch— the pepper sketch of 1:48 p.m.—was too short in height! I was sketching away and zig-zagging around and didn’t want to go off the bottom of the page.

That drawing is the least accurate, but it’s also my favorite. It has personality. It’s a bit cheeky.

Sometimes it happens that way.

Just look at the lines of that pepper in the blow up (click on it). Crisp, angled, yet describing something wonderfully smooth. I think brush pen is an amazing tool.

I hope you get to sketch with one today—and eat a pepper.

Remember it only takes a moment to get something in your journal. It only takes a moment to get some practice seeing light, and shape, and line, into your day. Seven minutes and done…don’t think about it, just do it and be done!
